Letter to the Chief Magistrate of New York City, 1796 Nov. 29.

The collection consists of a letter from John Y. Noel, mayor of Savannah, Georgia, dated November 29, 1796, to the Chief Magistrate of New York City. The letter asks for assistance because of a great fire which broke out on September 26 and provides details as to the extent of the fire and its devastating effect. Also includes a newspaper account of the fire reprinted from the COLUMBIAN MUSEUM on November 29, 1796.

In 1819, the Georgia legislature expanded the Mayor's Court into the Court of Common Pleas and Oyer and Terminer for the City of Savannah. This change included the election of the Judge, Clerk, and Solicitor by the city's citizens, rather than by appointment. In 1853, the name changed to the City Court of Savannah.
